Hurricane mission trips

Members of First Methodist have participated in four mission trips to the Gulf Coast to aid with the recovery and reconstruction following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. A fifth trip takes place in February 2008.

They have documented their trips, their work and how they have seen the Lord through a series of blogs.

February 2008 trip: Read about the 43 mission team members, primarily from Methodist churches in Henderson County, who spent a week in the shrimping village of Dulac in south Louisiana helping residents continue rebuilding from damage caused by Hurricane Rita.
January and February 2007 trips: Read about the three teams from various Methodist churches around Henderson County that are turning to Gulfport, Miss., in January and February 2007 to continue the reconstruction effort. Look for the archives section for blogs from January 2007 and February 2007.

Here are blogs that describe each trip:
  • "The A Team": Our first trip, in late October 2005, helped homeowners clean up following the levee collapses the inundated New Orleans with floodwaters, including gutting a resident's house to prepare it for rebuilding.
  • "The B Team": We returned in January 2006 to gut more houses.
  • "Henderson County Methodists I": Volunteers from First Church team with Methodists from Chapel Hill and Bennett Memorial UMCs to return to New Orleans in October 2006, this time to help homeowners rebuild. While there, they visit a resident who has reoccupied her home thanks to help from "the B Team."
  • "Henderson County Methodists II": The biggest effort from Henderson County Methodists results in volunteers from six Methodist churches around the county (plus volunteers from two other churches) teaming up for a series of three one-week mission trips in January and February 2007, this time to Gulfport in coastal Mississippi, which took the brunt of Katrina's savage winds.
  • Henderson County Methodists III will take approximately 40 volunteers to Dulac, La., 1 1/2 hours southwest of New Orleans, Feb. 3-9, 2008. Financial contributions and fund-raising opportunities are welcome. Contact Paul Herron III, the trip coordinator from Chapel Hill Methodist Church in Henderson, for more information.
